Topic: The Tabernacle of God 391
Scripture: But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say not of this building. (Heb 9:11)
Note: Matt 16:18, “And I say also to you, You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” When Jesus spoke on the revelation of the Church for the first time, He spoke on building the Church upon a solid foundation that’s indestructible, unshakeable and immovable due to changing circumstances and forces of nature. By its architecture and foundation the Church shall be built on the strength, power and sacrifice of His shed blood on the cross of Calvary. Hell and its forces shall have no antidote to the power that shall be wielded by the Church.
Jesus is the rock upon which the Church shall be built. Peter isn’t the one being referred to here by Jesus as the rock. It was the revelation of the confession through Peter that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. It’s the strength and power of this revelation that would carry the full force of the kingdom of heaven against the powers that operate in the heavens and the earth. Peter, translated as Petros in Greek means a piece of rock, a small stone.
The Church was built with the endurance and power of the shed blood of Jesus to resist the machinations of hell. It could not have possibly been conceived and built upon a vacillating, unstable and uncertain character such as Simon Peter, whose natural tendency was to see him betraying his Master Jesus Christ on three different occasions during Christ’s tormenting, frightening and tortuous trials with the Jewish leaders that eventually led to His crucifixion and death.
Peter’s denial of Jesus was very much against his own wishes and desires, as he had earlier sworn to Jesus never to deny Him when the Master prophesied the ominous occurrence. On that occasion when Peter contested the prophecy of Jesus concerning his life, he had placed his trust in his love, loyalty and commitment to Jesus. What Peter failed to recognize however, was that it’s impossible to survive on our own goodwill, self-righteousness, intelligence, strength and personal power without being anchored to the Rock which is Jesus.
Food for thought: The arm of flesh shall fail us, but Jesus never fails.
Declaration:
We have an anchor that keeps the soul,
Steadfast and sure while the billows roll,
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Saviour’s love.
