Topic: The Tabernacle of God 411

Scripture: But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say not of this building. (Heb 9:11)

Note: Matt 16:18, “And I say also to you, You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” There are people within the Church whose personal interests and desires are at variance from the Kingdom vision of God on earth. Judas Iscariot was a perfect example of a politically disenchanted disciple of Jesus who became a misfit among the rest; a significant shift in interest from that of his Master, resulting in a backstabbing act of betrayal against Jesus.

What began as a benign political interest, entertained by all the disciples from the beginning, turned sour at the end when Judas failed to allow his interests to synchronize with that of his Master. The environment in which one lives and grows has a significant influence on the thinking and flavour of one’s belief system. The historical background of the political climate at the time of Jesus was that of an earnest expectation for the revelation of the coming Messiah, who shall lead an armada of forces against Roman imperial domination. This political expectation was unanimous among all Jews.

However, after three years of very intense ministry, during which period Jesus sought to disabuse the minds of His disciples about their growing political interests, and the fact that He didn’t come with a political agenda to topple the Roman regime, but came for something bigger, better, deeper, more glorious and more important than what they were thinking or entertaining in their minds. Jesus emphasised to His disciples that the purpose of the Son of man was to come and seek and to save that which was lost (Luke 19:10).

In addition to this politically disappointing statement of emphasis, Jesus had already started talking about His impending death. This obviously didn’t feature in the master plan of Judas, who had other ideas of living life beyond his means, with a utopian idea of becoming the Treasurer in the kingdom of the Messiah. A mixed emotion of anger and disappointment must have conspired to influence the decision of Judas to make some money off his Master, who was bent on dying anyway, before He eventually capitulated to death.

Food for thought: Serving God in spirit and in truth goes beyond commonsense. It has all to do with the heart of man.

Declaration: God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth. John 4:24
