Scripture: My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. Hosea 4:6

Note: The joy in the marriage between Hosea and Gomer was shortlived. After the birth of their firstborn son, Jezreel, Gomer began to behave differently as if she was disinterested in the marriage. Hosea’s demeanour and fervour in the ministry that God had called him to, had remained unchanged. He preached with the same fervency and passion as was before the birth of their child. The theme of Hosea’s message to Israel centered around “Return unto the Lord.”

The noticeable change in Gomer’s attitude towards her husband, his ministry and their marriage, began exactly after the birth of Jezreel. Gomer became restless like a bird trapped in a cage. Hosea preached with passion as if he wasn’t experiencing any hiccup in his marriage. The palpable lack of disinterest demonstrated by Gomer to everything surrounding her husband became increasingly worrying. It was in direct contrast to the earlier encouraging warmth of Gomer to the ministry of Hosea.

Whilst Hosea was preaching and encouraging the wayward nation Israel to turn from their sin of idolatry in flirting with other gods and learn to trust in God for their deliverance from the threat of surrounding nations, his own marriage was going through a difficult patch of disinterest from a wife that had suddenly become disillusioned, disenchanted and disenfranchised with the whole marriage arrangement. Gomer was beginning to feel trapped, suffocating under the annoying warmth and affection from her husband.

Gomer represented Israel as a nation. The birth of Jezreel represented the birth of the evil dynasty under Jehu, whose leadership evolved as a tool for judgment to destroy the evil seed of Ahab and Jezebel. Jehu had overstepped his boundaries in the execution of judgment as sanctioned by God. Jehu had been ruthless and merciless in bloodshed. For this purpose, God had decided that the dynasty of Jehu would not continue forever. The prosperity and peace that accompanied the idolatrous regime of the dynasty of Jehu was going to be shortlived, as destruction was on the horizon and it would happen in the valley of Jezreel.

Food for thought: Our God is a God of justice and judgment, yet His love and mercy towards man are beyond human understanding.

Declaration: And it shall come to pass at that day, that I will break the bow of Israel in the valley of Jezreel. Hosea 1:5
