Scripture: My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. Hosea 4:6
Note: What was most unlikely to ever result in a marriage because of Gomer’s past life which she would be happy to quickly forget in a moment, became a reality of a marriage between the young prophet, Hosea and the former prostitute now turned a new leaf. Gomer’s complete turnaround in her life as reflected in her name, was to see a marital life that began well but sadly didn’t end well.
The blissful marriage between Hosea and Gomer lasted through to the period of the birth of their first son. The name God gave to the child was Jezreel. Now, Hosea was aware by virtue of his calling that every milestone within his marriage was going to carry a prophetic significance for the nation of Israel. His marriage to Gomer profiled the relationship between Yahweh and Israel. Inspite of Israel’s unfaithful past, Yahweh was willing to extend a hand of fellowship to Israel to see if she would turn from her waywardness and come back to Him.
Prophetically, it was at Jezreel that king Jeroboam’s great grandfather Jehu, came to destroy the last vestiges of the evil reign of king Ahab and his wicked wife, Jezebel. The destruction of the wicked Jezebel and her seed, led to Jehu’s ascension to the throne of Israel. The transition from the dynastic lineage of Ahab to a completely new order under Jehu, led to the wiping out of the seed of Jezebel, who was under judgment from God for her atrocities against innocent lives.
The ascension of Jehu to the throne was marked by ambitious crimes of bloodshed and violence that saw excesses on the part of Jehu. For overstepping his boundaries in excess bloodshed, Jehu’s dynasty was bound to suffer judgment for his atrocities against a previous regime under judgment for its own atrocities. Generations had passed and the dynasty of Jehu had experienced peaceful transitions from one leader to the other, prosperity and expansion of its territories. Israel had forgotten about Jehu’s atrocities but God had not forgotten. Unknown to Israel and Jeroboam II, destruction was on the horizon and it was going to happen in the valley of Jezreel (Hosea 1:4,5).
Food for thought: Payback for unrepentant past misdeeds may take time to come, but nothing ever misses the radar of God.
Declaration: And the Lord said to him, “Call his name Jezreel, for in just a little while I will punish the house of Jehu for the blood of Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel.” Hosea 1:4
