Scripture: My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. Hosea 4:6
Note: The pride of Israel in rejecting the word of God, which is the tested and inerrant word for the good of humanity, proved to be a costly and self-destruct action that eventually caused Israel the liberty they so much cherished but took for granted. God’s word is intended by God for the good and protection of the peace, freedom and independence of man. Dead conscience of a people that had become steeped in lying, killing, stealing and fornicating, felt no need for God, His word and neither His messenger.
Israel had enough trust in her prosperity and peace. The economy was working. People had jobs. Peace prevailed internally and externally with their neighbours. There was no cause for alarm to entertain any fear of impending attack. Wealth is might and might is power. Israel was already wealthy, mighty and powerful. They didn’t see the need for panic in the immediate horizon that might necessitate the need for their calling upon God’s assistance.
They believed in themselves and their ability to solve their own problems as masters of their own destinies. “Each one for himself and God for us all” was their national mantra. They believed in the power of their knowledge which had proved them right by making them wealthy. They had now earned the right to despise the prophet Hosea and his supposedly doomsday words. They couldn’t imagine how God could feature in their newly acquired knowledge where the reigning philosophy was independence from God. The priests and prophets had become the butt of jokes in the new Israel.
Knowledge is very important as it is a source of strength and ability to do godly exploits. Yet, much as knowledge is very important, if it isn’t the right knowledge that connects one with God and creates a life changing relationship with His Son, Jesus Christ, then it becomes a knowledge that would perish with the individual in this life. Israel despised and treated the knowledge of God’s word with disdain. God reminded them that despising the knowledge of His word is tantamount to lacking knowledge altogether.
Food for thought: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. Proverbs 9:10
Declaration: And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits. Dan 11:32
