Scripture: But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say not of this building. (Heb 9:11)
Note: Matt 16:18, “And I say also to you, You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” The second of the mandate to the Church is the last supper that Jesus had with His disciples, in which He predicted that was going to be His last meal prior to His arrest, trials, crucifixion and death. The last supper contains many significant principles, and continues to be an important part of the Church and Christian lives throughout the world.
The last supper was recorded in all the three synoptic gospels of the New Testament. Luke’s Gospel account of the Eucharist contains significant life changing highlights worth noting. In Luke 22;15-16, Jesus spoke to the disciples with reference to the Passover: “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” Jesus knew that He was going to participate in the Passover in a different capacity as He was going to be offered as the Passover Lamb for the redemption of all humanity.
The second significant highlight that Jesus spoke of is in Luke 22:17-20. “And He took a cup, and when He had given thanks He said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves. For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes. And He took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant of my blood.”
As the Passover Lamb that shall be sacrificed for all, Jesus admonished His disciples with regard to the bread and the cup; the broken bread stood for His body and likewise the cup which is the new covenant of His blood that has been poured out for our sake. In remembering His death and His shed blood on the cross, Jesus was teaching His disciples and the Church, emphasis on the spirit of brokenness and a life that’s poured out for the sake of humanity. Without getting broken and totally emptying ourselves, we could never influence and impact the lost world.
Food for thought: Brokenness and the poured out life, are two of the most impactful life changing values at the disposal of the Church.
Declaration: And He took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Luke 22:19
