Topic: Safety is of the Lord 6
Reading: 1Sam 23:7-14
Scripture: And it was told Saul that David was come to Keilah. And Saul said, God hath delivered him into my hand; for he is shut in, by entering into a town that hath gates and bars. (1Sam 23:7)
Note: Saul as the king of Israel also served as the Commander-In-Chief of the military force. He was a man who had led Israel in all her military successes during his reign. Obviously well versed in war and the art of fighting, one of his main specialties in combat was the art of throwing javelin or spear.
Unable to deal with the perceived political threat of David to his throne and dynasty, Saul’s obsession with that threat having matured into full blown depression, found expression in a direct, non subtle attack on David by attempting to stab the young man at close range with the spear. This was inspite of David doubling as the skilled player on the lyre with the capability to calm the troubled king down, anytime he was caught in the frenzy of his depression.
This unfortunate lounging attack at close range in the palace, missing narrowly on both occasions, convinced Saul that God indeed had His hand on David. This fact, and the fact that God had rejected Saul as king of Israel, combined to aggravate the already pathetic depressive situation of Saul. He feared David the more.
Saul already had an outstanding fear to deal with: the lyrics of the singing and dancing women after the fall of Goliath. That was the genesis of Saul’s fear syndrome. Fear has an uncanny way of making otherwise sane, respected people in society take strange decisions that begin to question their maturity and mental balance. Fear had been the reason why lots of political opponents of regimes across the world found themselves languishing in the dark dungeons of jail. The same fear had made victims of perceived political threat kiss early good bye to their lives, marriages, family and ambitions. Even within Church leadership, fear of usurpation of authority from talented associates have often found unfortunate victims being consigned to the warehouse of forgotten or expired goods.
Food for thought: Fear has torments, with the capacity to destroy both affected persons and innocent victims, if it’s not properly checked in time.
Declaration: There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. (1John 4:18)
