Topic: Safety is of the Lord 5

Reading: 1Sam 23:7-14

Scripture: And it was told Saul that David was come to Keilah. And Saul said, God hath delivered him into my hand; for he is shut in, by entering into a town that hath gates and bars. (1Sam 23:7)

Note: Saul’s inability to rejoice with them that rejoiced, just as Paul stated in Rom.12:15, by overreacting politically to the lyrics of the singing and dancing women in hounding the life of David, was to set the tone of derailment for his reign over Israel until he perished in battle against his old foes, the Philistines.

Saul had fears about David and it was rightly so. Extreme displeasure and anger were his lot in the midst of celebration of massive victory with rejoicing, singing and dancing. The king who should be leading the celebration was instead seething with boiling anger and murderous rage. A typical killjoy attitude emanating right from the command control centre of the throne had virtually enveloped the whole nation with darkness in the peak of their joy.

Saul wasted no time in showing the growing resentment that had built up inside him. He couldn’t hide his animosity towards David. This growing animosity that had obsessed the king couldn’t be bottled up as the resulting pressure was vented out through uncontrolled raving in the palace like an insane man trying to prophesy. David’s skilled, anointed hands providing solution to a troubled king who wasted no chance in trying to get at David by throwing a javelin at him.

If David ever thought that the spear that was thrown at him by Saul was a mere coincidence, a result of raving madness, he was to be proved wrong, as he persisted in playing the lyre to calm Saul of the evil spirit worrying his boss. A second close shave escape from another thrown javelin at him from a close distance by the king, convinced David of an intent and a conspiracy beyond any shadow of doubt to assassinate him. These two missed assassination attempts convinced Saul that the Lord was with David, and it made Saul to fear David the more.

Food for thought: Dreams, visions or incidents that get repeated are very often indicative of something that has been established by God. Learn to listen obediently to what God might be saying to you.

Declaration: And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass. (Gen.41:32)
