Topic: The empty tomb 72

Reading: Matthew 27:57-66, 28:1-15

Scripture: He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee. (Luke 24:6)

Note: Paul’s mastery of the language he used in the illustration of the role of the law in relation to the “schoolmaster” which is more accurately rendered “pedagogue” was an institutional practice among the wealthy Greek and Roman families that was imported into Aramaic culture at an early date. Wealthy and intensely Orthodox Jewish parents living in Gentile cities adopted such practice basically for the protection of their sons.

The pedagogue or schoolmaster wasn’t a teacher. He was anything but a tutor; a guardian, supervisor, attendant, bodyguard, disciplinarian who were usually very stern and severe in their discipline, as they were practically responsible for the safety of the children. Similarly, the law was a pedagogue to the Jews with a view to preparing them for justification by faith in Christ, producing convictions of guilt and helplessness.

One of the core functions of the pedagogue or schoolmaster was to prevent wrong association with objectionable companions, inculcating moral lessons at the least opportunity. These attendants commonly wore forlorn faces in the streets depicting their meanness. Thus, to the average Jewish boy desiring his freedom, the schoolmaster was the epitome of everything objectionable and lack of liberty.

The schoolmaster just like the law, was necessary but irksome, to direct us until our spiritual coming of age in Christ.

Food for thought: The coming of Christ on earth is the fulfilment of eternity in time and space for the redemption of humanity.

Declaration: But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. (Heb.5:14)
