Scripture: But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say not of this building. (Heb 9:11)
Note: Matt 16:18, “And I say also to you, You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Jesus had just taught His disciples a very important truth on the broken and poured out life. Jesus didn’t come for His parochial interest or self aggrandizement. He came to seek and to save the lost. Such selfless people who are not in a rat race for the good things of this life are normally spared the sword of hatred and evil machinations, in order that they could provide comfort and containment for the troubled poor in society.
Unfortunately for Jesus, He wasn’t spared the vicious plans of His detractors and saboteurs for providing critical containment for the poor in society. His powerful healing ministry that was capped with the beauty of the spectacular miracle of raising Lazarus from the dead after 4 days in the grave, marked Him out as an archenemy who had gone a step too far in providing veritable threat to their aspirations and livelihood. For a life that was lived totally for others, little did we expect that Jesus would manage to attract to Himself so many enemies of diverse constituencies.
The shocking diversity of enemies attracted by Jesus included one of His own trusted, bosom friends; a disciple among the twelve, who were all chosen according to the leading of the Spirit by Jesus Himself. Judas Iscariot was in bed with the evil religious establishment of the day. They had always wanted to kill Jesus but couldn’t penetrate the tight security that Jesus enjoyed from the twelve disciples and the mass of people who had warmed up to Him as followers for healing their sick, making their blind see and raising their dead.
The enemies of Jesus feared the people but rather interestingly, they did not fear all the disciples of Jesus, who were much closer to the Lord. Using Judas Iscariot as a fifth column into the inner circles of Jesus, they were able to locate Christ, arrest Him, tried Him and sentenced Him to a cruel death on the cross. What was supposed to be an impenetrable, inner covering for Jesus, became the weakest point, for which the enemy used to break down the watertight defence into His stronghold.
Food for thought: Watch your closest confidants, for they can be used as the target of your weakest point against you.
Declaration: But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table. Luke 22:21
