Topic: Paradox of Independence
Reading: 1Chronicles 22

Scripture: Now, my son, the Lord be with thee; and prosper thou, and build the house of the Lord thy God, as he hath said of thee. (1Chron 22:11)

Note: Independence is a condition of a nation, country, or state in which its residents and population, or some portion thereof, exercise self-government, and usually sovereignty, over the territory. The opposite of independence is a dependent territory. Independence does not necessarily mean freedom from interdependence of nations through trade, exchange of information and sharing of knowledge through educational exchange programmes.

The word independence means “not dependent”, or not having to depend on anyone or anything else. It also means being strong and able to survive alone. Independence means freedom from external control, influence, support, aid, or the like, of others.

In Ghana, our annual budget forecasts are made with donor nation contributions forming a critical component of our budgetary allocation. The migration of our economy to a lower middle income nation has become an albatross on our necks. It is the kind of news that should have been received with joy and gladness but never to be. The drying out of donor inflows into the country as a result of the newly earned status of middle income earner rather turned to expose our vulnerability as a sovereign nation, requiring IMF cash intervention to prevent a drowning economy.

David planned sufficiently ahead of time before his death. The gold and silver reserves that he bequeathed to his successor, Solomon, didn’t leave the latter worse off. Solomon increased in wealth, influence, power and peace worldwide because he chose wisdom from God over any other thing just as his father had prayed for him.

Food for thought: What are the choices that we make as a nation? Do we value the wisdom that comes from God?

Declaration: Only the Lord give thee wisdom and understanding, and give thee charge concerning Israel, . (1Chron 22:12)
