Topic: Independence with dependence
Reading: 1Chronicles 22

Scripture: And David said to Solomon, My son, as for me, it was in my mind to build an house unto the name of the Lord my God. (1Chron 22:7)

Note: This is what the well-known military General, Brigadier Nunoo-Mensah had to say on the occasion of the 59th independence anniversary of Ghana, a day after: “”Yesterday I was at the Independence Square witnessing the celebration of 59 years of independence …and when I looked at the parade, for example, all the equipment on parade – apart from the human beings who were there – everything else…, was imported. Everything: the guns, the cars, everything, even the uniforms that the men [security services] were wearing were imported, except the human beings and that saddened me a great deal,” General Nunoo-Mensah complained.

In his view, it was sad that Ghana, after almost 60 years of nationhood, is unable to produce many things locally, a situation he said was regrettable. Sadly, the General isn’t alone in his frustrations. Many Ghanaians feel similarly frustrated especially after the recent infamous importation of furniture from China for our legislature. If after almost 60 years of independence, we can’t produce basic furniture for our parliament, then our status as an independent, sovereign state is seriously brought into question. As a nation and its people, the borders of our minds, our thinking, our dressing and fashion taste, as well as the food that we eat are still not secured yet.

We think and dream foreign. That’s our aspiration. Our vocal language and body language are all modelled on foreign tastes. David fought for true independence in securing the borders of Israel through victories in wars. There’s a new dimension of warfare that we need to wage on our minds so that we can secure the borders of our thinking, our behaviour and our tastes. Above all, we must let the mind of Christ be in us if we truly desire independence from the clutches of satanic control, sexual oppression and drugs.

Food for thought: When Jesus sets you free, you become truly free, requiring no colaterals.

Declaration: And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (John 8:32)
