Scripture: And when they saw Joseph afar off, even before he came near to them, they conspired against him to slay him. Genesis 37:18
Note: The dipping of Joseph’s coat of many colours in blood by his brothers, is one of the most beautiful pictures of Christ depicted for us in the Old Testament by the Holy Spirit. Lev 17:11, “For the life is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls. For it is the blood that makes atonement for the life.” The altar is a place of slaughter. It symbolises death. The cross of Jesus is the greatest and most emphatic of all altars.
The dipping of Joseph’s coat in blood demonstrated that he had been at the altar. Jacob understood that to mean that his son was dead. Joseph’s coat is a picture of the bloody coat of Jesus that the soldiers gambled for at the foot of the cross. The coat of Joseph was a mantle representing the father’s love. It was an emblem of the calling and anointing upon his life. Any person that has been called by God must have had a bloody encounter at the cross of Calvary. The cross of Jesus is the place of refuge for everyone. It is the place where atonement is made for our souls through the most magnanimous exchange that ever took place.
Rom 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” The exchange that takes place when we take refuge at the cross is entirely free, fully paid for. Our sins are totally forgiven, and in its place we receive eternal life. This is the grace of God. It demonstrates the enormous love that God has for us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Rom 5:8). Nobody, absolutely nobody needs to die in their sins, if only we would take advantage of the provision that God has made in Christ Jesus, who died in our stead by paying fully the price for our sin with His shed blood at Calvary.
There can be no true mantle, no true calling and no true anointing on any person who has not visited the altar of Jesus Christ at the cross of Calvary. When we take refuge at the foot of the cross, we die together with Christ through His crucifixion. We are buried together with Him, and yet, because He rose from the dead, we are all risen with Him. The life that we live now, is by faith in the Son of God who loved us and gave Himself for us. This is the greatest demonstration of God’s love towards man (Gal 2:20).
Food for thought: God’s love for mankind is unconditional. Salvation is free. There are no hidden charges.
Declaration: Then they took Joseph’s robe and slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood. Gen.37:31
