Scripture: My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. Hosea 4:6
Note: This prophetic rebuke from God through Hosea was addressed specifically to the priests of Israel who had failed in their core mandate of leading the people into God’s presence through teaching, reading, studying, meditating on the law of God, and constantly reminding the people about the importance of the law of the Lord. The nature of most people is to begin to behave stubbornly like sheep when God’s word isn’t consistently heard; to provide correction, reproof and instruction in righteousness (2Tim 3:16).
The essence of Scripture is basically to provide inspiration and serve as a profitable tool for knowledge, empowerment and doctrine. The knowledge base of an individual, serves as a bedrock and a solid foundation for sound judgment to the conscience to feed on. Through the law of God, handed over to Moses, God created a reliable channel through which divine knowledge of His word would be constantly fed to His people, helping to shape their conscience and bring them closer to God.
The prophet Hosea found himself in an environment where the law of God had become a scarce commodity. Knowledge of the law of God was lost. They had even forgotten that there was anything like the law of God. The land of Israel was instead, infested with swearing, lying, murder, stealing and adultery (Hosea 4:2). Unbelievable and unimaginable behaviours were ruling in Israel with reckless abandon. The people had become a law to themselves, setting new records of disobedience, breaking every boundary of sin, with bloodshed becoming the order of the day.
When there’s lack of knowledge, destruction follows. The fabric of society is shred into fragments. There’s no benchmark for what constitutes law and order. The family unit breaks down. Women and children become the unfortunate victims when lawless people without boundaries and without respect to God, become a law to themselves. Chaos, lawlessness and self destruction become the main diet upon which their conscience is nourished and fed with. Depraved and pathetic men become their own gods.
Food for thought: One of the greatest tragedies confronting the human race today, is the rejection of the law of God.
Declaration: The law of the law is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. Psalm 19:7
