Scripture: And when they saw Joseph afar off, even before he came near to them, they conspired against him to slay him. Genesis 37:18
Note: The pit experience of Joseph, instigated by his brothers, was a decision that was inescapable, dead or alive. That, Joseph ended up in the pit alive and managed to survive the pit experience, albeit the shortest experience representing the beginning phase in his long and tortuous journey in the school of the wilderness. The longevity of Joseph’s pit experience was not the most important thing as in the lessons garnered by Joseph and the development that impacted his life. The duration of an experience is not necessarily the material consideration in the school of the Spirit, but the spiritual experience that’s imparted into one’s life for successfully completing an earthly assignment.
A pit is a large hole in the ground. Anytime a pit is classified as a ditch or an unintended trench, it’s most likely to have been accidentally caused due to the actions of natural forces such as a landslide. Where a pit is dug during war purposely for approaching enemies or for a game, then it’s intended as a trap for the unsuspecting enemies or the game to fall into. On the other hand, a pit could be an area reserved or enclosed for a specific economic purpose such as mining or constructional works, in particular: In this case, the pit ceases to be a trap, as planned provisions are made for a way of escape.
Pit experiences were never intended by God to last forever. Unfortunately, many people find themselves parked in the pit of life, with no plans or strategies to ever come out from the hole in which they find themselves. A pit by nature is a cul de sac, a dead end. There’s no way anyone can drive through a dead end. The only option is to reverse and move away in the opposite direction. Too much time is wasted thinking, worrying and reminiscing on emotional despair, mental anguish, physical pain and financial hardship, when the obvious solution should have been to retrace the steps that found you in the pit, trusting and depending on God’s power and wisdom to get out.
Unfortunately for people who find themselves capitulating to the pit experience in their lives without a fight, discouragement, depression and defeat become their lot. They give up rather easily without a fight. Anytime people find themselves in a pit, the obvious way one could possibly get a help is by looking up. This is because the only hope of finding light is by looking up and not down. As you go further down the pit, life can only get darker, as all that will be staring at you right in your face will be a deep, dark hole with diminishing hopes.
Food for thought: What seemed to Joseph a deep, dark end to his journey in life, became a pathway to the palace, through the power of God.
Declaration: Hope deferred makes the heart sick: but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life. Proverbs 13:12
