Scripture: And when they saw Joseph afar off, even before he came near to them, they conspired against him to slay him. Genesis 37:18
Note: What was supposed to provide a source of great joy and pride to Joseph, rather became a source of hatred from his brothers. The gift of the coat of many colours, that came from the heart of a loving father to a son that fondly reminded him of the first love of his life, Rachel, became a poisoned chalice to Joseph. A combination of transgenerational missteps by people that Joseph had no control over, and for which he could do nothing about, all combined to create a fouled ambiance that set up Joseph dangerously to fall, preparing the ground for one of the most treacherous sibling rivalry war of vendetta.
The naivety of a young Joseph in a fouled environment was evident in the childish manner in which he opened himself up to his brothers through his dreams. Again, as was with all the unfortunate events that took place generations before him, the dreams of Joseph were not self instigated, stage-managed, craftily pieced together orchestrations by the young man to pull a fast one on his brothers to gain an unfair advantage over them or to superimpose his imagined supremacy over his senior brothers in a most irritating manner. The dreams originated from God. Yahweh revealed it to Joseph through His own divine prerogative.
Joseph could do nothing about the dreams that were revealed to him. What he could have done was not to share the dreams first with his brothers considering how sensitive they were. Joseph was not a sophisticated person to have envisaged the kind of dire consequences that were to follow the sharing of the dreams. Immaturity almost cost Joseph his life. The dreams were two different revelations; meaning the same thing. It was an indication that whatever God intended doing with Joseph’s life was already established.
Immaturity is one of the key factors that leads to rude attenuation of what promises to be an otherwise bright future and ministry of many people. Such people are unable to anticipate the reality and weight of the information that they are carrying in their bosom. They end up divulging information on themselves to the wrong crowd, that should have been advisedly guarded in a prayerful manner. Fortunately for Joseph, his father was still alive. Joseph could have shared the dreams first with Jacob, an authority figure in his life whose love and affection for him, he could vouch for on any day. Instead, Joseph reversed the order of communicating his dreams by telling his brothers first, before telling his father. It was too late as the damage had already been done.
Food for thought: Following the divine order is a demonstration of wisdom. It’s mandatory for preventing abortive dreams.
Declaration: And his brothers envied him; but his father observed the saying. Genesis 37:11
