Scripture: When the native people saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “No doubt this man is a murderer. Though he has escaped from the sea, justice has not allowed him to live.” Acts 28:4

Note: Although the barbarians were wrong in their assumption of a deserved penalty against Paul, they were right in their knowledge of good and evil. They knew that murder was evil. It was as if they had the works of the law written in their hearts, just like the Jews had the law written on tablets of stone. They also knew that the death penalty was appropriate for murderers. They didn’t have to learn this from anybody.

These islanders had not been to the university to learn all that capital punishment entails. Without the benefits of classroom work they were able to employ the power and judgment of their conscience to good effect. This goes to support the fact that outside of the Jews who had the written law on tablets, making them responsible for their actions before Yahweh, God has revealed to all men what is right and what is wrong in their consciences. This revelation to man through the conscience, makes the actions of men answerable to the God of heaven and the earth.

The function of the conscience can be compared to the warning lights on the dashboard of a car. Those amber and red, flashing lights on the dashboard are meant to serve as warning to the driver to prevent something catastrophic from occurring. Every driver reserves the prerogative to heed to the warning lights or ignore them. However, experience has shown that ignoring such useful signals which incidentally are working in the interest of the driver and the car, can prove very disastrous or costly.

Ignoring the dashboard flashing, red lights is akin to refusing to listen to the truth or heed to the warning that may be confronting you. Although it doesn’t cost much to stop the car and check what’s actually going on with the car, which may actually cost the driver some precious time or delay the journey, it’s always the wisest or the right decision to halt and verify. The red, flashing, warning lights are packaged as the gospel of the kingdom of God in our lives. We can choose to ignore it and perish or heed to the warning and save our car from incurring avoidable cost.

Food for thought: Hell is avoidable. The red, flashing lights in our lives keep staring at us in the face without fail. We can choose salvation or lose our lives.

Declaration: He who is often reproved, yet stiffens his neck, will suddenly be broken without healing. Proverbs 29:1
