Scripture: My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. Hosea 4:6

Note: The phenomenon of predators parading in the corridors of power had long been a historical feature according to the Scriptures, with the clearest examples of such dubious characters being top of the mind of great leaders that ruled vast empires. Aside Joseph’s encounter with the magicians and soothsayers tagged as wise men during his era of slavery in Egypt, another notable Hebrew young man by name, Daniel, had the rare chance of coming into contact with them at a time he was in exile in Babylon during the reign of king Nebuchadnezzar.

Both Joseph and Daniel were in foreign lands when they encountered these dubious characters parading in the corridors of power. They had both been forced into another country against their will. Their separate journeys were due to the sins of their fellow Hebrew families. Joseph’s was due to his own siblings selling him off into slavery, living with the wicked act against their conscience and enjoying the price of blood money after selling their brother. Daniel belonged to the royal lineage of Judah but found himself in exile due to the sins of their kings, priests and the people, in abandoning Yahweh and neglecting their relationship with God through observation of the Sabbath.

Daniel was a choice prince of Judah, belonging to the king’s seed, well favoured, without blemish, skillful in all wisdom, cunning in knowledge, understanding science and had the ability in him to stand in the king’s palace without being overawed (Dan 1:3-4). Joseph’s father was Jacob, renamed Israel, because as a prince he had prevailed with God and man. Joseph was Israel’s favourite son, whom he made a coat of many colours. Joseph was gifted by God with the ability to dream when he was young and he understood dreams, the seasons and the times, a favour that positioned him for greatness and rulership.

Thus, Joseph and Daniel had similar basic characteristics that prepared them for their future assignments of greatness. They were both prepared by God with abilities that enabled and empowered them to be able to walk in the corridors of power. Both assignments they would be confronted with involved providing solutions to kings who were troubled, disturbed and out of their wits, requiring urgent but superior spiritual insights, knowledge and understanding of the ways of God. Their gifts could only have come from the God of heaven and the earth, who sees into eternity.

Food for thought: The period of preparation towards tomorrow’s assignment is a needed requirement, never a waste of time.

Declaration: Children in whom was no blemish, but we’ll favoured, and skillful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans. Daniel 1:4
