Scripture: My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. Hosea 4:6

Note: Changing phases of a nation’s economy bring about the evolution of different types of predators. These predators fall into two main categories: financial and sexual predators. Their modus operandi is the skillful use of guile, deceit and false promises to con their unsuspecting targets into their fold. Every nation on earth has had the occasion to navigate through both lean and booming seasons at different periods of their national life. Hosea and Gomer lived through a period in Israel when they had a booming economy that brought about the neglect of Yahweh, as they believed in their own abilities to change their destiny.

During the uncomfortable period of Joseph’s life as a slave in Egypt when he unfortunately found himself in jail for a crime he didn’t commit, an interesting situation arose in the palace of Pharaoh that eventually opened a door of opportunity to Joseph that changed his life forever. Pharaoh had a dream that greatly disturbed him. Pharaoh’s spirit was disturbed and he couldn’t sleep. It was an emergency situation and the only trusted people Pharaoh knew who could interpret his dreams were the magicians and the wise men in the land.

These magicians and wise men were the men of clout known and recognised by Pharaoh. For a long time, they had used intelligence, guile and deceit to hoodwink everyone, including Pharaoh, into believing and trusting that they were special folks with special abilities. Unknown to everyone these were typical con artists who had succeeded in using their intelligence to put bread on their table for years. Even Pharaoh trusted these unscrupulous folks. These pests and predators had evolved at a period the services of such roles were required. Unfortunately, there was nobody around filled with the Spirit of God to fulfill that role effectively.

The spectacular failure of the magicians and wise men in interpreting the dream of Pharaoh brought about the emergence of Joseph, who had long been forgotten and abandoned in the dungeon of Pharaoh. Joseph was remembered because it was his time as appointed by God. Joseph’s successful interpretation of Pharaoh’s dream brought about his elevation to the position of the second gentleman in the land of Egypt. His elevation brought about the demotion and subsequent redundancy of the magicians and the wise men in the land. Those predators lost their influence on the people as well as their crooked means of livelihood.

Food for thought: The most appropriate response to predators is the emergence of people filled with the Spirit of God in the land.

Declaration: And Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find a man like this, in whom is the Spirit of God?” Genesis 41:38
