Scripture: My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. Hosea 4:6

Note: The second chapter of the book of Hosea vividly vindicated the moves of the prophet Hosea in his undying love for his wife. It showed Hosea as a man who loved his wife despite the horrific disappointments in her attitude towards this noble institution of marriage. The several bouts of demonstrated forgiveness and undying love for a woman who showed enough proof of having chosen the infamous paths of humiliation and destruction cannot be discounted.

Gomer, often so frail in her mind and so easily attracted to vain riches and getting captivated to the empty promises of men, was always so willing and ready to capitulate to the attractions of these promises from her numerous lovers. It was unimaginable that a woman, a wife of Israel would so foolishly be willing to exchange the pride, safety and security of her marriage for fleeting insecurity and emptiness of the streets. Sad as the life of Gomer reflected in the story, she was not different from Israel as a nation in the discharge of her wifely spiritual duties to Yahweh.

That a man in our generation should find himself pleading on several occasions for an addictively unfaithful wife to return to her marriage would be considered unthinkable or a miracle. Yet, that was the uncomfortable situation in which Hosea found himself; the victim of an abuse pleading for restoration of their marriage. Hosea’s frustrations were brought to the fore when after several such pleadings he decided to take a firm action as a man against Gomer.

Gomer was jogged out of her senses by the frightening prospects of the insecurity of life in the streets with three children tagging along. Commonsense won over insecurity. Family and good friends contributed to inspiring a positive change from Gomer. But these efforts didn’t have the sustainability, power and influence to provide a lasting change in Gomer’s heart to prevent repeat occurrence of her abhorrent behaviour.

Food for thought: The practice of frightening people away from the horror of hell fire may produce a dramatic response to repentance that’s usually not sustainable.

Declaration: Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Acts 4:12
