Scripture: My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. Hosea 4:6
Note: It’s never too late to rescue a failing marriage. Hosea’s consistent admonition to his wife was to return to her marriage. The next two children from their marriage were products of the waywardness of Gomer. Her wayward behaviour reflected exactly on israel’s spiritual marriage to Yahweh with the call on Israel to return to Yahweh falling on deaf ears. The temptations and dilemma facing Gomer to return to her easy and freestyle life of reckless abundance of material things with her numerous lovers rather became more intense with passage of time.
Hosea never gave up on Gomer in the midst of the discouraging spectacle of his wife contemplating of a possibility of life back to the streets. Hosea had a strong desire to save his marriage irrespective of what the prevailing circumstances were telling him. When there’s a desire to work on a failing marriage from both spouses, the marriage stands a very good chance of getting revived, no matter the depth of hurts, discouragement and estrangement that might have taken place.
Hosea might have had his own failings rooted in his inexperience, resulting in setbacks to his marriage. Yet, his positive attitude towards rescuing a marriage that had sunk so low in depth and quality of relationship, with his wife involved in multiple infidelities with her lovers and getting pregnant by them, set him apart as a true man of God, ready to go the full extent to forgive an erring wife in what the average man of today would tag as impossible to forgive and forget, and in doing so restore his wife back to their marriage.
Hosea loved Gomer with sacrificial depth and passion just as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for her. It’s only sacrificial love that has the capacity to lay down a life for the sake of the spouse. Hosea demonstrated sacrificial love towards Gomer just as Christ did for the Church. With sacrificial love and the readiness to exercise forgiveness towards a spouse, most marriages stand a good chance of getting revived or rescued. Sacrificial love is the spirit of Calvary.
Food for thought: Sacrificial love has no fear or regard for limits, boundaries, the stigma of hurts and the nature or depths of wrongs.
Declaration: Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the Church, and gave Himself for it. Eph 5:25
