Scripture: My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. Hosea 4:6
Note: The period of Hosea’s call as a prophet in the northern kingdom of Israel was during the reign of king Jeroboam II. The reign of Jeroboam spanned through four successive kings in neighbouring Judah. The reign of Jeroboam saw through the parallel reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah; an indication of longevity and stability in Israel.
The long reign of Jeroboam saw an unprecedented prosperity and peace in Israel. His military conquests had extended the borders of Israel farther than had previously been since the days of king Solomon’s kingdom. With the military exploits and expanded territories came tribute money from subject nations. Endless supply of tribute money pouring into the treasury in the capital city of Samaria brought about great wealth and national prosperity.
With increasing prosperity, stability and peace, came the usual associated moral and spiritual degeneration of the people. Whenever moral and spiritual degeneration set into a nation, it brings forth of its kind the fruits of idolatry, secularism and materialism. The hearts of people begin to crave for and chase after these things. These new values of moral and spiritual degeneration become the new trophies that set into motion a rat race of reckless standards with no respect for God and our humanity. Sin becomes rampant and riotous living is exploited by the mighty and strong in society to their selfish advantage.
It was therefore no wonder that the disingenuous list of the inglorious sins of Israel began to resemble the list that would be enumerated for any nation in the twenty-first century. Swearing, lying, killing, stealing, adultery, perversion, drunkenness, perjury, deceit, oppression and like are now being committed by people on regular basis, with reckless abandon, without the fear of God nor their conscience pricking them. The love of money is the reigning idol that’s worshipped at the expense of the true God. Money means more than God in our generation. This evil expression of the love of money in our heart, is what grieves the heart of God the most.
Food for thought: Idolatry is anything that’s worshipped, adored, loved, valued or given more premium, relevance or priority than that which is given to God.
Declaration: For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1Tim 6:10
