Scripture: And when they saw Joseph afar off, even before he came near to them, they conspired against him to slay him. Genesis 37:18
Note: The similarities between the life of Joseph and that of Jesus as regards the indwelling of the Spirit in their lives can be seen in the trajectories of their individual journeys right from the very beginning of their lives. Their lives’ mission on earth began with getting sent by their father. Prior to their assignments, they didn’t lack in glory and power. They had to forgo the glory, comfort and safety of what they were used to, in order to be well positioned to execute the assignment in front of them.
Joseph’s assignment saw him getting stripped of his coat of many colours that brought him glory and instant recognition, making him stand out from his siblings. Joseph didn’t only find himself stripped of his clothes, glory and safety; he was thrusted into a waterless pit, showing how low the favourite son of Jacob could go. Similarly, Jesus Christ being the Son of God and God; the One by whom, through whom and for whom all things were created, condescended from the height of glory and power to the earth, beginning life from the lowest level of a stable.
Phil 2:5-11, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus, Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled, and became obedient onto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also has highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Joseph began his convoluted journey from his father’s house to the pit, then to Potiphar’s house as a slave. From the position of a slave, he got jailed as a prisoner on the basis of false accusation of attempted rape. Finally, he left the prison and ended up exalted in the palace of Pharaoh, clothed in glory and power. Jesus began life as a baby from a stable where all ranks of people in society could have access to Him. He grew up as a carpenter, taking on the trade of His earthly foster father. In His mission, He lived like a nomad; travelling, teaching and performing healings and miracles, having no fixed abode of His own. He was accessible to everyone from every class in society. Falsely accused, He was sentenced to die on the cross. Yet, He defied death when He rose again from the dead and ascended into glory, highly exalted above every name that’s in heaven and on earth.
Food for thought: Going through the lowest point in life isn’t a sign of failure. It’s only a passing phase to the top.
Declaration: For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him. Col 1:16
