Scripture: My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. Hosea 4:6
Note: Hosea was literally and prophetically tasked with an unusual assignment that would have made many prophets consider whether the bitter cup they’re about to take isn’t actually a figment of their own imagination. What Hosea endured as a family man in his marriage, which most people would like to be kept as their private life, away from the prying eyes of the public, was not what the ordinary person in the streets could have imagined.
In his call by God, Hosea’s life ceased to be a private life. Hosea was ushered into the public domain through his peculiar call. What was supposed to be his personal marriage to Gomer, turned into one of the unprecedented and unparalleled public embarrassments for a man who would call himself a messenger of God. Being known as a messenger of God is one thing, and being accepted by the public is also another thing altogether. Most people are already suspicious of any man who claims to have a message from God for them. Hosea was not different from that yardstick.
All that the suspecting public would be waiting for is a lead into the inner life of the messenger of God. The level of expectation that must be met by the man of God is of course naturally higher than that of the ordinary people. Unfortunately for Hosea, worsened by the nature of his calling, his marriage to Gomer, a popular whore known by everyone in town, his marital life failed to inspire confidence in the general public about the man, the messenger and his message. Hosea was messed up by God to serve as a message to the people of their own messed up lives.
Yet the very mess in his marriage that was meant by God to serve as a stinking reminder to the people of their own mess with other lovers, was the same reason for which they rejected him and his message. What was supposed to serve as an introspective message to the people, became the headline juicy and succulent story that kept the people gossiping, failing to see the bigger picture of their own mess and failed relationship with God. What was supposed to be a focal point for repentance and reconciliation with God became a topical talking point of distraction for the people, as they sank deeper into the abyss of idolatry in their love affair with other gods at the expense of their sacred marriage covenant with Yahweh.
Food for thought: Distraction is one of the key strategies used by satan to take away the mind and focus of people from what’s affecting their own lives to what’s irrelevant.
Declaration: The beginning of the word of the Lord by Hosea. And the Lord said to Hosea, “Go take to yourself a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land has committed has committed great whoredom, departing from the Lord.” Hosea 1:2
