Scripture: And when they saw Joseph afar off, even before he came near to them, they conspired against him to slay him. Genesis 37:18

Note: Both Joseph and Jesus were filled with the Spirit of God. This made both of them rulers on behalf of the King. Pharaoh made Joseph ruler over the whole of Egypt, except his throne. In Gen 41:41-44, “And Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.’ Then Pharaoh took his signet ring off his hand; and put it on Joseph’s hand; and he clothed him in garments of fine linen and put a gold chain around his neck. And he had him ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried out before him, ‘Bow the knee!’ So he set him over all the land of Egypt. Pharaoh also said to Joseph, ‘I am Pharaoh, and without your consent no man may lift his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.'”

Joseph began life in his father’s house, under the rule of Jacob. Life in his father’s house was that of pampering and overprotection, which wouldn’t have prepared him adequately for the sole purpose for which he was born. Through an act of providence, Joseph was sent to his brothers in the field to check on their welfare. In the field, Reuben, being the eldest of his brothers, exercised rule over the rest of his siblings. In Reuben’s temporary absence, a power vacuum was created when the rest of the brothers conspired out of hatred and fraudulently sold Joseph into slavery.

Thus, Joseph went through successive stages in degradation of regime changes of rule, finally ending in slavery. His condescension from rule under his father’s house to that of Reuben’s, saw a further slide from rule under Reuben to rule under the chaotic and hate filled ambience of his siblings, being the youngest among them. Rule under the regime of hatred saw Joseph landing in slavery in Egypt in the house of Potiphar. It was when he reached the lowest point in his life that Joseph began to rise again. Starting with Potiphar’s house, Joseph rose to become the ruler over the rest of his servants and businesses.

Falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife of attempted rape, Joseph unexpectedly found himself in prison where the king’s prisoners were kept. Under the rule of the keeper of the jailhouse, the Spirit of God brought Joseph favour that catapulted him from the depths of the dungeon to become the boss of the rest of the prisoners that comprised cabinet ministers of the king. The Spirit of God indwelling Joseph was the reason for the extraordinary blessings of favour that accompanied him everywhere he went, finally landing him in the palace of Pharaoh, who made Joseph ruler over the land of Egypt.

Food for thought: No depth of condescension in one’s life is a barrier to what the favour of God can do to overturn the misfortunes in one’s life.

Declaration: But the LORD was with Joseph, and showed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison. Genesis 39:21
