Scripture: And when they saw Joseph afar off, even before he came near to them, they conspired against him to slay him. Genesis 37:18

Note: Both Joseph and Jesus were condemned with two others to die, of which one was pardoned and given life, and the other died without hope. The trumped up attempted rape charge brought against Joseph by Potiphar’s wife found him in condemned cells, where the king’s prisoners were kept. In that jail, anyone could die any day the king pronounced the death sentence on you. It was a condemned cell with no knowledge of the definite day of obtaining your freedom. You were always on the edge, knowing that daily survival was a result of grace.

In Gen 40:1-3, “And it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt. And Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers. And he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound.” These two big men became the common cell members of Joseph, with the latter serving as their leader in the condemned cell.

Both butler and baker dreamt one night in prison, worried, not knowing the interpretation of their respective dreams. Joseph’s accurate interpretation of their dreams led to the forgiveness and restoration of the butler to his original position, whereas the baker wasn’t forgiven and he got hanged. These two men in prison with Joseph are similar to the two thieves that were crucified together with Jesus. One of the two thieves asked Jesus for forgiveness while he was on the cross. He was forgiven and received full restoration in Paradise with Jesus that same day.

Both Joseph and the butler eventually left the prison forgiven and restored just like Jesus and one of the thieves did. The butler represents the noble in society as he worked directly for the king. The thief represents the lowly in society who would normally not be worth anyone’s time. Yet, he got the attention of Jesus inspite of his lowly position in society. The two stories concerning Joseph and Jesus provide hope for all classes of people in society, without exception. The qualification for forgiveness of sin is repentance, without consideration to one’s importance in society.

Food for thought: Salvation is free, classless and available to everyone who believes and confesses Jesus as Lord.

Declaration: And he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom. And Jesus said to him, “Verily I say to you, Today you shall be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:42-43
