Scripture: And when they saw Joseph afar off, even before he came near to them, they conspired against him to slay him. Genesis 37:18

Note: The relationship between Potiphar’s wife and Joseph was that of a master servant relationship. It was an unequal relationship which naturally to the eye, was not expected to have developed to a level of sexual affection, even if it was only from one party. Unfortunately, lust is born out of human corruption and it isn’t a respecter of class, race or colour. The blinding and numbing effects of lust paralyse the human senses momentarily, bypassing all the stages of rational thinking that would normally be deployed in the decision taking process before moving into implementation stage.

Additionally, the marital status of Potiphar’s wife made any such dream or wild imagination from Joseph a remote possibility as far as rational thinking was concerned. Any slip up from Joseph could cost him his precious life. He couldn’t afford to get caught. Aside these reasons, there were more important reasons for which Joseph was not going to acquiesce to the seductive demands of his master’s wife; his fear of the Almighty God and his respect for Potiphar. Joseph knew and respected his limits of operation. He wasn’t ready to compromise his godly time tested values that had guided him from his infancy on a silver platter.

Potiphar’s wife unfortunately, wasn’t on the page with Joseph in this unequal, most unlikely and outrageously deadly relationship festering within the blind spot of his dreaded master, right under his roof. That’s the blinding effect of the power of lust on our thinking process. That’s why it’s important that we control the things that lead us into lustful behaviours; the things that our eyes are attracted to and the things that we love to listen to, that do not edify nor inspire us in the ways of God. That’s why David said in Psalm 119:11, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

It takes the power and wisdom of God’s word in one’s heart to avoid falling prey to the deceptive, numbing and tantalising effects of lust in our lives. The word of God serves as a filter and a gatekeeper for our hearts. In filtering, it helps us to be able to decipher what’s good and acceptable from what’s evil and likely to lead us into destruction. We all appreciate what a gate or a door does for our common good. It helps to keep away unwanted guests or intruders from the safe confines of our dwelling place. It also prevents babies or children in the house from straying from the house. Joseph was a respecter of covenants. He didn’t want to stray from his relationship with the God of heaven and the earth.

Food for thought: God is a respecter of covenants. Are you a respecter of the covenant relationship between God and you, that was ratified with the blood of Jesus?

Declaration: For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 1John 2:16
