Scripture: And when they saw Joseph afar off, even before he came near to them, they conspired against him to slay him. Genesis 37:18

Note: The first stop of Joseph in Egypt after his sale by his brothers was Potiphar’s house. Now fully owned by the dreaded Potiphar, captain of Pharaoh’s execution squad, it was understandable that Joseph would comport himself and be of good behaviour if he really treasured his soul. That way, he wouldn’t suffer unnecessary grief so long as he remained unsold in the house of Potiphar. The news of his master favouring him and giving him the head stewardship of his home and business interests didn’t come as an achievement that was out of this world.

In Gen 39:3, “His master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord caused all that he did to succeed in his hands.” It’s probable that Joseph was not the first slave to have distinguished himself creditably in the house of Potiphar. His master obviously saw something different in the young man for which the former attributed it to the doing of the Lord. Potiphar saw the growing progress of Joseph and the unusual favour upon his life; the result of which was a measurable increase and success in all that he did, and that it could not have been a sheer coincidence attributable purely to the efforts of man.

Potiphar was smart. Having observed Joseph for a while, he wasted no time in making him the overseer in charge of his house and all his business interests. This move by Potiphar brought great blessings to him, his household and even beyond, as far as the field. Potiphar therefore entered into a phase of rest and great blessings during the leadership period of Joseph over his house. When the right people are in the right places of leadership at the right time, the results are a period of rest and great blessings upon the people.

Therefore, the shocking news on the attempted rape accusation from Potiphar’s wife must have come as a great shock and a big disappointment to Potiphar. That, Potiphar spared Joseph’s life must have been a combination of his great love for him and his desire to observe him further in prison to ascertain the veracity of the damning accusation against his favourite servant. The condemned prisoners cell was bad enough for Joseph considering his innocence, but it was good enough in giving him a second chance to life and the opportunity to recover all the lost ground, correct, the wrong impressions and remove the negative publicity tag attached to his image, the reason for which he found himself in prison.

Food for thought: When the right people are in the right places of leadership at the right time, the results are a period of rest and great blessings upon the people.

Declaration: And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house , and over all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field. Gen 39:5
