Scripture: And when they saw Joseph afar off, even before he came near to them, they conspired against him to slay him. Genesis 37:18
Note: Both Joseph and Jesus were falsely accused, and made to suffer punishment for offences that they didn’t commit. Having been sold into slavery in Egypt, Joseph became the personal slave of Potiphar, Pharaoh’s chief executioner. Being a faithful servant to his master, Joseph rose to the level of the supervising steward in his master’s household. All other servants reported to Joseph, and his master’s business prospered immensely because of Joseph’s faithfulness in his stewardship.
Joseph was a growing young man, a teenager, when he was sold into the household of Potiphar. Unknown to Joseph, he had all along been coveted sexually by his master’s wife, who wanted the young, handsome man for a sexual tryst. Subtle and covert traps were set in motion that were expected to practically leave Joseph with little or no option than to sleep with his master’s wife, if he didn’t want further trouble in addition to his already turbulent past that had wickedly combined to turn him from a most loved son into a slave.
Gen 39:10-12, “And as she spoke to Joseph day after day, he would not listen to her, to lie beside her or to be with her. But one day, when he went into the house to do his work and none of the men was in the house, she caught him by his garment, saying, ‘lie with me’. But he left his garments in her hand and fled and got out of the house.” Joseph decisively rejected this free invitation to a sexual romp with Potiphar’s wife when he fled the scene, leaving his covering garment behind during his escape. This hard evidence of his garment was used as the main exhibit to nail Joseph into jail for a false accusation of attempted rape.
Matt 26:59-61, “Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put Him to death, but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward and said, ‘This man said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to rebuild it in three days.'” Falsehood, treachery, false witnesses with false evidence were employed in the stories of both Joseph and Jesus in their sentencing. Joseph suffered more than a decade in jail, endlessly rotting away, not knowing his fate whether there would ever be freedom for him again. Jesus was tortured, crucified and died a humiliating death on the cross on the basis of false accusation, descending into hell to depopulate and disempower both hell and death.
Food for thought: False witnesses, false evidence and false accusations can never bury the truth forever.
Declaration: A man that bears false witness against his neighbour is a scatterer, and a sword, and a sharp arrow. Proverbs 25:18
