Scripture: And when they saw Joseph afar off, even before he came near to them, they conspired against him to slay him. Genesis 37:18

Note: Joseph might not have been literally put to death by his brothers, but the presentation of his bloodied coat to Jacob was supposed to be a statement of fact to his father that his son was dead. The shed blood of the innocent kid goat on behalf of Joseph, atoned for his death. Lev 17:11, “For the life of the flesh is in the blood: I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that makes an atonement for your soul.”

The life of Joseph as depicted in the Old Testament, was typical of the life of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. Whereas Joseph was apparently put to death, Jesus was actually put to death. Whereas the innocent kid goat died, shedding its blood on behalf of Joseph, innocent Jesus died on the cross, shedding His blood for mankind. In doing the comparison between Joseph and Jesus, some people assert that Jesus didn’t really die as it’s popularly written in all the four Gospels.

The swoon theorists think that Jesus didn’t actually die on the cross. The swoon theory is an idea that claims Jesus just fainted; He swooned. People thought Jesus was dead, so they took Him off the cross and put Him in the tomb. But after a couple of days, the cool air in the tomb resuscitated Jesus and He walked out of the tomb. So what His followers thought was a resurrection was really a resuscitation. This point of view is just one of numerous arguments from naysayers and opponents against the veracity of the Gospel account of the death of Jesus, in their lame attempts at casting doubts on the truth of His death.

Persons that were crucified usually died from asphyxiation. If a Roman soldier wanted to hasten the victim’s death, he would break the victim’s legs so that he could no longer push himself up and breathe. That was what happened to the men who were crucified with Christ. “So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with Him; but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.” (John 19:32-33). These soldiers couldn’t have been rookies that had been assigned to a high level political prisoner who had made controversial declarations concerning His death and resurrection. They were diehard professional killers with vast experience of many killings behind them.

Food for thought: There is more historical evidence that Jesus lived, died and resurrected from the dead than the fact that Julius Caesar ever lived.

Declaration: God raised Him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for Him to be held by it. Acts 2:24
