Topic: The Tabernacle of God 324
Scripture: But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say not of this building. (Heb 9:11)
Note: 2Cor 5:1, “For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” Nicodemus was a member of the Jewish Sanhedrin and a Pharisee by persuasion. These two descriptions of Nicodemus already made him an unlikely person ever to become a friend or a disciple of Jesus. Yet, his interaction with Jesus in John 3:1-21, was to later portray a hardcore Pharisee who became a secret disciple of Jesus.
In John chapter 7, there arose a great consternation among the people, after some got convinced that Jesus could be the Christ. Being a man from Nazareth of Galilee, the Pharisees were convinced Jesus could not be the Christ, John 6:41. However, what these people failed to remember and appreciate was the truth that Jesus was actually born in Bethlehem of Judaea. When Herod wanted to kill the baby Jesus, he gathered the chief priests and the scribes to know where the Christ should be born. It was confirmed to Herod as Bethlehem of Judaea. Matt 2:1-5
Lack of the right knowledge and understanding of biblical truth can make the misinformed person a danger to society. These misguided people actually wanted to arrest Jesus because of the ensuing confusion among the people that was basically self inflicted. The second time Nicodemus was mentioned, he reminded his colleagues in the Sanhedrin that the law required that a person be heard before being judged (John 7:50–51). Nicodemus spoke in defence of Jesus, a sure sign of the impact that Christ had had in his life when he first visited Jesus.
Finally, Nicodemus appeared after the Crucifixion of Jesus to provide the customary embalming spices, and assisted Joseph of Arimathea in preparing the body of Jesus for burial (John 19:39–42). The fruits of the impact that Jesus had in the life of Nicodemus turned him into a secret disciple within the camp of the enemies of Jesus.
Food for thought: Among His enemies and even in the grave, Jesus is still Lord.
Declaration: Does our law judge any man, before it hears him, and know what he does? John 7:51
