Scripture: But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say not of this building. (Heb 9:11)
Note: 1John 1:7, “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” Fellowship in the light is similar to a family affair where you do not get to choose who will be your siblings. You find yourself surrounded by fellow believers who have all been redeemed with the shed blood of Jesus Christ. You didn’t choose them as you might probably have preferred, just as they also didn’t get to choose you. Jesus chose all of you.
Unfortunately, this vital truth in fellowship is lost on most believers. Funnily enough, a lot of us would have preferred to have been given the option to select our personal choices of people as to who gets to be called, chosen and redeemed with the blood of Jesus Christ. We simply struggle to get on smoothly with certain people, no matter the efforts in time, tolerance and resources that we invest into the relationship. It gets to the point where out of frustration, we begin to give up, forgetting that it wasn’t the idea of the Master to give up on us when He called us all into the fellowship of light.
The best strategy for dealing with strains in the way we relate to one another within a fellowship setting is to avoid them in the first place. Early signs of escalating tension in our interactions should be checked with a retreat before matters get out of hand, where one or both parties may be tempted to descend into the gutter to achieve equalization. It’s naturally tempting for people to want to defend their fragile ego with all they have at their disposal when they feel bruised, especially in the presence of people that they hold in high esteem.
Fellowship isn’t about our pride, our fierce defence of our ego, reputation and image. What’s most paramount at the end of the day is the fact that God is glorified in all situations in our dealing with others, and the fact that we did all we could to redeem a soul from sinking into the abyss of darkness. The desire to act in whatever ways we can, using all legal and ethical means to save some, is very dear to the Father’s heart.
Food for thought: Patient endurance and self-control are part of the ingredients constituting the fruit of the Spirit.
Declaration: And they that are Christ’s have crucified the affections and lusts. Gal 5:24
