Topic: The Tabernacle of God 363

Scripture: But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say not of this building. (Heb 9:11)

Note: 2Cor 5:1, “For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” The human body serves as the tabernacle or tent for the soul. Being a tentmaker, Paul understood the frailty of the tent as a building in transition that could easily be taken down at any moment. So long as a permanent place or destination had not been reached, the tent served its temporary purpose of providing shelter and comfort for its owner.

At the time of construction of a tent, the tentmaker is aware that whatever materials were used for construction were for temporary housing and that there may be the need to occasionally disassemble the tent in order to continue the journey. The nature of the construction was therefore impacted by the prior purpose of the use of the tent, taking into consideration the difficulty of work that may be involved in taking down the tent to be reassembled for a later use.

The tools used in the construction of the tent, coupled with the cost of those tools, informed the overall materials choice for a purpose that’s deemed not permanent. The speed of reaction to the need to move on whenever the owner of the tent was faced with natural challenges, disaster, force majeur or even invasion from potential enemies, would all be determinants in the tent making enterprise. At the back of the mind is an unforgettable mandate that’s not lost on any sojourner: “This is not our final dwelling place or destination.” Forgetting this unwritten mandate, which is etched in the heart of every sojourner, is a recipe indicative of one’s unpreparedness. This mandate could inform the difference between life or death, and whether the anticipated place of destination would be attainable or not.

The life journey of believers can be totally identified with the reality, beauty and hard lessons of this tent allegory. The decisions and choices that we make regarding critical investments in this temporary tabernacle of ours, at the expense of the destination of our souls, could serve as the difference between our failure and success. Our eventual destination is to be with Jesus, that wherever He will be, there we may be also. Are there earthly pressures, pleasures, obstacles, challenges with your faith regarding what you have believed in, that are serving as disconnect between you and Jesus?

Food for thought: Any uncertainty in your life or disconnect between you and Jesus on earth could be the difference between you and eternity.

Declaration: And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you to myself; that where I am, there you may be also. John 14:3
