Topic: Safety is of the Lord 29
Reading: 1Sam 23:7-14, 1Sam 18
Scripture: And it was told Saul that David was come to Keilah. And Saul said, God hath delivered him into my hand; for is shut in, by entering into a town that hath gates and bars. (1Sam 23:7)
Note: Undue pressure mounted on David by Saul for the delivery of the one hundred foreskins dowry before the expiry date, ended in an anticlimax for Saul. The king’s expectation was that the unnecessary pressure would cause David to commit unpardonable mistakes that would ultimately lead to his death at the hands of the Philistines.
David did not only disappoint Saul’s wicked wishes and intentions. He exceeded expectation for the one hundred foreskins in delivering two hundred foreskins before the obnoxious deadline. Left with no other option, Saul handed Michal in marriage to David. This offer of his daughter wasn’t done with the goodwill of a father towards the son-in-law. Michal as wife to David was packaged by Saul as a snare that would act as a channel leading to David’s death.
Saul wasn’t yet done with David even though he knew very well that his daughter loved David very much. The welfare of his daughter wasn’t Saul’s concern. What was of utmost concern to him was the direction of the throne. He was ready to sacrifice his daughter’s interest, marriage and love life to secure his throne. Saul was afraid of David, after all the intricate setup and traps he set against him to die at the hands of the Philistines failed.
Saul knew that God was with David, and this fact made him all the more scared. Why Saul ever thought that he stood a chance against God and against his anointed, is difficult to phantom. Disobedience against God had led to his rejection as king. Pride and arrogance had prevented him from acknowledging his wrong, repenting of his sin and going back to God with a contrite heart. Instead, he chose to fight God and against His anointed. No wonder, he ended up as a madman.
Food for thought: Insanity is fighting against God and against His anointed. The end result is death.
Declaration: There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. (Proverbs 16:25)
