Topic: Jesus is worthy of Worship

Scripture: Then those who were in the boat came and worshipped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.” (Matt 14:33)

Note: Worship is a token of reverence, and it’s used as a sign of homage shown to men and beings of superior rank. Among the Orientals, they demonstrate worship by falling upon the knees and touching the ground with the forehead as an expression of profound reverence.

Specifically among the Jews, through whom God revealed Himself in Abraham and His chosen seed Isaac, prostrating oneself, making obeisance and expressing respect to a being of superior rank was only reserved for Yahweh. Mistakenly expressing such reverence to heavenly beings such as angels, was promptly rejected and rebuked by the angel. In the Book of Revelation, the Apostle John nearly made a mistake by making an attempt to worship an angelic being. Fortunately for John, the angel refused the worship on the grounds that he’s a fellow servant of the same Master, Jesus Christ (Rev 19:10).

Jesus was worshipped even at the time he was a baby. The three wise men, also known as the Magi, worshipped Jesus as the King of the Jews, based on their understanding of what they had seen of his star (Matt 2:2). Jesus was worshipped by a leper, a Jew, who inspite of his condition, understood that Jesus is Lord and got his healing through that revelation (Matt 8:2). The ruler of the Synagogue, a Roman soldier, worshipped Jesus and received healing for his daughter who was at the point of death (Matt 9:18). The Syro-Phoenician woman, a Greek, used worship of Christ as a bypass tool to access healing for her sick daughter, at a time Jesus had openly proclaimed that his mission was specifically to the house of Israel (Matt 15:24-25).

So this particular worship of Christ when he demonstrated supremacy over the laws of nature, wasn’t an isolated case of Him accepting and receiving worship. He consistently received worship, accepted worship and even had the power and the effrontery to forgive sin.

Food for thought: Only God accepts and receives worship.

Declaration: And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. (1Tim 3:16)
