Topic: The empty tomb 18
Reading: Matthew 27:57-66, 28:1-15
Scripture: He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee. (Luke 24:6)
Note: The massive disloyalty and unbelief displayed respectively by the two disciples, Peter and Thomas, in the events leading up to Christ’s trial and after his death, were indications of their vulnerability as ordinary people, who without the presence, influence and power of Christ, were as fallible as anyone.
The despondency and apathy that befell the disciples after Christ’s arrest, trial, torture, crucifixion and death were enough to force them into hiding from the Jewish religious aggressors.
The sudden transition from apathy and despondency to unheard of joy, courage, hope and devotion to the early church after the bodily resurrection of Christ and many appearances to the disciples, could only have been possible through the many infallible proofs of his appearance over a period of 40 days to more than 500 people of diverse following.
The evidential proof of the brutalities meted out to Christ through his crucifixion, showing the nail marks and spear wound were convincing enough to establish the divinity of Christ as truly God, as exclaimed by Thomas. The disciples knew that it could take only God to overcome the power of death that had ruled from the beginning of the ages over humanity.
Food for thought: The vacillating behaviour of the disciples of Jesus is enough proof of the historicity of the empty tomb.
Declaration: Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. (Acts 4:13)
