Topic: From the beginning it was not so 63

Scripture: He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. (Matt 19:8)

Note: “Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.” (Luke 23:34)

One of the surest proofs of the depravity of the human heart is the fact that people take pleasure in violence, blood and death. We see this attitude in the Roman and Greek amphitheatres, where the spectators enjoyed watching men fight and kill each other. We see this in the casual onlookers who came by and watched Christ die a horrible death. We see this in the history of the persecution of believers when they were thrown to lions, tigers and bull terriers; torn apart into shreds as the spectators screamed in wild excitement at the spillage of innocent blood.

We see this same attitude in our modern society as millions of adults and children find pleasure and entertainment whenever blood is spilled. In Las Vegas, Nevada, in the USA, which is dubbed the Mecca of boxing in the universe, boxers who packed ferocious punching power with the capacity and capability to hurt their opponents badly in a fight, with colateral spilling of blood, receive very high approval rating. Spectators are prepared to pay through their nose to watch such fighters in action where more money is generated, because people are prepared to bet an arm and a leg on such fighters to win.

This wretchedness of human hearts has persisted from the time of Christ’s torture, crucifixion and death till today. It is the purpose for which Christ died, so that in bringing forgiveness, redemption, reconciliation, love and care to humanity, he would bring change in attitude towards one another.

Food for thought: The shed blood of Jesus Christ carried more than entertainment value. It is the only sinless blood that has the root capacity for sin.

Declaration: For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. (John 3:17)
