Topic: The empty tomb 67

Reading: Matthew 27:57-66, 28:1-15

Scripture: He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee. (Luke 24:6)

Note: Man in his depravity, rebellion and rejection of God, forgot himself as a covenant breaker, without justification in the sight of God, given the track record of his obedience to the law as delivered to Moses. For the law of Moses in itself was incapable of providing justification to any man in the sight of God.

Justification is the act of God where guilty man is acquitted and discharged completely from his offence, for Christ’s sake, declaring man free from guilt and acceptable once again in the presence of God. The shed blood of Jesus Christ on the cross at Calvary has completely erased every evidence of offence against man, committed in Adam through his disobedience and rebellion against God. Even as Christ was raised again from the dead for our justification, man became more than an acquitted person in the presence of God, declared with the authority God to be righteous in His sight.

Thus, man’s attempt to justify himself before God through his own works of righteousness is untenable, wholly pathetic and miserable in the sight of God, as they are like filthy rags before God. The only initiative or avenue left for the redemption of depraved man could only have come from God Himself.

Yet, man in his depravity, drew a schedule and job description for his own deliverer in the person of the Messiah. Man’s schedule was expectedly devoid of the cross which was considered too awful, demeaning, distasteful and disgraceful to be associated with an elevated office as that of the Messiah. Man forgot that the things he considered repugnant were the exact reflection of his own pathetic inner being in the sight of God.

Food for thought: Man has completely underestimated his own wretchedness without the need for the cross, the death, resurrection and ascension into glory by Christ Jesus.

Declaration: Who was delivered for our offences and was raised again for our justification. (Rom. 4:25)
