Topic: Legacy in leadership
Reading: 1Chronicles 22 & 23

Scripture: And he gathered together all the princes of Israel, with the priests and the Levites. (1Chron 23:2)

Note: David established a godly foundation for his leadership as the key legacy that he would bequeath to his successor, Solomon. In strengthening the political, spiritual and judicial structures of the nation, David left behind a legacy that had the approval of God for a healthy nation.

The stability David brought to Israel at the apex of governance, in appointing Solomon as the king whilst he was still alive is significant and unprecedented. David understood the possible flashpoints in appointing Solomon, who wasn’t the eldest son among his children. Based on the birthright principle practised among the Jews, the lot should have fallen on Adonijah. But that wasn’t the plan of God. The Lord had spoken explicitly to David that a son shall be born to him whose name shall be called Solomon, he shall be a man of rest and he would be king after him, and he would build the temple (1Chron 22:9).

It is important to note that in establishing a legacy for posterity, we should be mindful of what God says, as the final and overriding authority against what we consider as the norm, cultural practices, traditional beliefs, logical inferences and even commonsense. All these factors may serve as useful guidelines for our everyday life so far as they do not contradict the word of God.

Food for thought: God’s word is the final authority in the affairs of men.

Declaration: Now set your heart and your soul to seek the Lord your God; arise therefore, and build ye the sanctuary of the Lord God, to bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and the holy vessels of God, into the house that is to be built to the name of the Lord. (1Chron 22:19)
