Topic: Fear is a torment

Scripture: But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out saying, “Lord, save me.” (Matt 14:30)

Note: Peter, characteristic of his audacious nature, was the only bold man among the frightened disciples who dared to walk on water at the command and authority of the word of Jesus. The rest of the disciples were still clinging safely to the comfort of the troubled boat, while they fearfully watched the jaw-dropping, unfolding drama of crazy Peter do the unthinkable by walking on the water just as he saw the Lord do.

This spectacular feat of Peter put him on record as the only disciple among the twelve to have ever walked on water. So long as Peter’s focus was fixated on Jesus and on the authority of his infallible word, Peter, just like Jesus succeeded in defying the law of flotation. Peter affirmed his unwavering faith and trust in Jesus as the Master and Lord in charge of the powers of nature, even the sea. It was only when Peter turned his focus from Jesus and his word, and began to look at the boisterous wind, that fear took over his mind and he began to sink.

Fear, anxiety and worry, are thieves that steal from us the joy, happiness, health, success and victory of the moment, taking our focus away from Jesus. They don’t just harass us for the moment, but spectacularly introduce the additional burden of causing us to fret against the uncertainty of tomorrow. A lot of failures that happens to people is a result of walking in the grace of today while carrying the additional burden of tomorrow at the same time.

Food for thought: Stress and poor health are very often the by-products of fear, worry and anxiety.

Declaration: Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. (Matt 6:34)
