Topic: The empty tomb 66

Reading: Matthew 27:57-66, 28:1-15

Scripture: He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee. (Luke 24:6)

Note: The ways, expectations, calculations and the reasoning of man are entirely different from the ways, expectations and the workings of God. The Jews had a job description for the Messiah, even before his birth. Their expectations of the coming Messiah were enormous; falling within three strata of core achievements.

It’s so ironic that the Jews expected the Messiah to fulfill his portion of the assignment while they knowingly messed up their little portion of the contract in killing the prophets that God sent to them to come and prepare the way for the Messiah. The killings of the prophets were all masterminded in Jerusalem, the chosen holy city. When God became fed up with their killing of the prophets, He stopped sending them prophets for 400 years until John the Baptist came to prepare the way for the coming of Jesus.

In their backsliding and falling away, the people of God chased after other gods for salvation and this angered Jehovah. They worshipped idols and forsook the sanctity of the Sabbath, set aside and consecrated to the worship of God. Expectedly, their punishment for their stiff-necked behaviour was getting exiled into servitude in foreign land with the suffering consequences of hardship in slavery until they remembered their God as the true Saviour, merciful in His judgments and gracious in His ways.

Are you also quick to remind others of their God-given assignments while neglecting yours which is staring glaringly at you? Can you think of an expectation from God concerning your life which you are aware you have been running away from and for which reason you keep groping in the dark alleys of the wilderness in your life? Have you wondered why you keep going round in circles, achieving nothing of significance in your life? You may simply have been running away from your mandated assignment. Reflect, repent and return to God.

Food for thought: In their assignments for the coming Messiah, the cross which represents a curse and a failure in their opinion, never featured on the expectations of the Jews. But God had a different agenda on the cross for the Messiah.

Declaration: Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. (1Cor.1:25)
