Scripture: Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.” (Luke 23:34)
Note: Having calmed the fears of the disciples in the boat caught on the wrong side of a raging storm after his dramatic appearance walking on the water, Jesus immediately calmed their nerves with these comforting words of encouragement, “…..Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.” (Matt 14:27)
From a crying disciple caught in the web of fear of a ghost and hopelessness, Peter rode on the emphatic word of reassurance from Christ to dare the Lord to his word to walk on water. Matthew 14:28, “…..Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.” Jesus’ response to Peter was, “Come.”
In the request of Peter to Jesus, he addressed him as Lord. From the Greek word “kurios” that Peter used, he was actually affirming his faith in a person to whom belongs the elements of nature, in this case the sea. As the Master and Lord, he has the power to decide if Peter should come to him walking on the water. The affirmation of faith by Peter in the power and ability of the Lord as the decider and the one in control of the elements of nature, enabled him to walk on the authority of the word of Jesus to also walk on water.
Food for thought: I agree with the songwriter who sang these glorious words in awe of Jesus, “He’s got the whole world in his hands.” 4X
Declaration:
He’s Lord, He’s Lord
He’s risen from the dead, He’s Lord
Every knee shall bow and every tongue confess
That Jesus Christ is Lord
