Topic: Safety is of the Lord 20

Reading: 1Sam 23:7-14, 1Sam 18

Scripture: And it was told Saul that David was come to Keilah. And Saul said, God hath delivered him into my hand; for he is shut in, by entering into a town that hath gates and bars. (1Sam 23:7)

Note: After intercepting the worrying signals from the women touching on the throne, the worry and anxiety of the thought of losing his throne to David exacerbated an already depressing situation in the palace, where the secret about the “king’s sickness” was threatening to get out of hand. The “king’s sickness” wasn’t the type that could be broadcast to the whole nation. It was a big palace secret that would be too shameful and damning to the security of the state to leak out.

David was the trusted servant with the panacea to cause this unpredictably shameful sickness to abate for a while. Saul had been thinking about too many things at the same time. The weight of all these thoughts had made him a vulnerable pick for demonic spirits of insanity that were having a field day with the king, except for the anointed and skilful presence of David that seemed to supernaturally create an atmosphere unwelcoming for the presence of tormenting and oppressive spirits.

Saul had his rejection by God at the back of his mind as one of the biggest weights that was threatening to tip him over the sanity threshold. The anxiety of this problem had further been compounded by the sudden, growing fame and popularity of David that had been given currency by the singing women, although the singers themselves were pitifully unaware that the lyrics had touched raw nerves. The result of all the combined stress was the uncontrolled reaction from the king in going into overdrive as he rumbled and raved on in non regal manner unbecoming of a king.

The opportunistic king, shamelessly taking advantage of David’s lack of alertness as he ministered on the lyre, wasted no time in running at the cheap opportunity of an easy and defenceless target with a double stabbing assassination attempt that could easily have been mistaken for an unthinkable reaction from a king at the peak of a raging attack from spirits of insanity.

Food for thought: Never take for granted any man or woman who is under the influence, activities or oppression of demonic spirits. They are capable of any unthinkable thing.

Declaration: Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. (2Cor 2:11)
