Topic: The empty tomb 60

Reading: Matthew 27:57-66, 28:1-15

Scripture: He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee. (Luke 24:6)

Note: For all the traumatic experiences the disciples of Jesus went through starting from the arrest of Jesus, his trials, flogging, eventual crucifixion, death and resurrection appearances, the rather sharp transition from a position of weakness where the disciples’ flight from fear had taken them to hiding places, living in fear, disappointment and despondency, marked a miraculous recovery back to a position of courage, where the disciples were willing to die for their newfound faith in the Master.

This new, unfolding drama resulted in the tagging of the unusual and unexpected occurrence to the disciples to be known as the Interpretation Theory. The critics of Jesus couldn’t explain the sudden transformation in the lives of the disciples. They couldn’t explain the phenomenon of the outpouring of the Spirit of God upon the disciples on the day of Pentecost. The more confused the critics of Jesus became, the more they tried to explain things in their limited, philosophical understanding, the explanation for the philosophical names given to their theories and hypothesis.

“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but to us who are saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent” (1Cor.1:18-19). The message of the cross didn’t only involve wisdom and truth, but the active power of God coming down to save, heal, cast out devils and redeem from the power of sin.

The wisdom of this world had excluded God, emphasising human self-sufficiency, and elevating man to the apex of highest authority, refusing to recognise and accept God’s revelation through Jesus Christ.

Food for thought: So long as the preaching of the cross remains foolishness to man, ultimate perishing remains sure destination for man.

Declaration: For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. (1Cor.1:21)
