Topic: From the beginning it was not so 55

Scripture: He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. (Matt 19:8)

Note: Lev. 17:11, “For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.”

Biologically, it is the blood that acts as the vehicle which transports the oxygen from the air that we breathe from our lungs to the brain and all organs and tissues of our body to provide life sustenance and coordination of activities between vital organs within the body. The average person will be dead within a space of 5 minutes, if oxygen access is denied to the brain. It is same blood that facilitates the exit of carbon dioxide waste from the body to keep us functioning properly. Thus, the biblical claim that the life of all flesh is in the blood is scientifically confirmed to be true.

When human or animal blood is shed, it signifies the end of life of the person or animal. This life-giving medium is the acceptable means of atonement for the soul. The blood by the OT Hebrew definition, acts as a covering, a pacifier, a propitiator, a purge and a reconciliation between the offender and God, as a result of the legal rites using the blood.

In the NT definition using the Greek, the atonement simply means exchange, where the offender moves from merely having the sin covered to pacify God, to having the sinless shed blood of Jesus Christ in exchange for sin, and being further restored to divine favour as if the initial offence never took place. This is what we call Grace.

Food for thought: Even the demands of the law rejoiced, having benefited with the advent of Grace.

Declaration: And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. (Rom. 5:11)
