Topic: The empty tomb 85

Reading: Matthew 27:57-66, 28:1-15

Scripture: He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee. (Luke 24:6)

Note: The Anakims were giants that descended from Anak, one of the offsprings of giants that emerged from the copulation of fallen angels with the daughters of men, in one of the many vain attempts by Satan to corrupt the seed of the woman, that had been prophesied as the one who shall bruise the head of the serpent; the old serpent.

The 4 giant offsprings were the Nephilims, the Rephaims, the Anakims and the Emims. The descendants of Anak dwelt in the southern part of Canaan, the promised land. In the days of Abraham, they occupied the region afterwards known as Edom and Moab. News of their formidable warlike appearance as described by the 10 spies who were part of the 12 spies sent by Moses, filled the Israelites with terror and they started wailing; a sign that there was no hope of the promised land dream materialising into reality anytime soon.

This early capitulation by Israel, coming against the backdrop of the many stupendous miracles under the mighty power of God since their exodus from Egypt, was to prove an extremely expensive act of unbelief in the sight of God, leading to unbelievable loss of lives.

The attempt to compare the strength, power and might of the Anakims to that of Jehovah, after all the experiences of God’s power they had acquired under their sleeves, was to be used by God as judgment against the people of Israel, for belittling God so ungraciously as to compare giants to Him.

Food for thought: Think of the many ways in which we subtly and disingenuously belittle God in our thoughts, our actions and in the decisions that we take whenever we are confronted with the odds. In many ways, we are no less different from the Israelites who suffered death in the time of the law for their grievous action. Because of God’s Grace, we are not consumed, not because of our own righteousness, but by the righteousness of Christ who lives in us.

Declaration: I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness comes by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. (Gal.2:21)
