Topic: From the beginning it was not so 81
Scripture: Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.” (Luke 23:34)
Note: The three disciples were part of the convoy that joined Jesus in the ship that was hit by a great storm, with the waves coming into the ship. Unfortunately for them, Jesus was fast asleep, unperturbed by the disturbing phenomenon, that ordinarily should have jogged any sleeping person awake.
The frightening situation in the ship left the disciples with no option but to call upon Jesus to rescue them. Disappointed in their lack of faith, Jesus rose up immediately to rebuke the wind and the sea, and instantly, there was a great calm. Marvelled at what they saw and the way Jesus did it, the disciples said, “What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!” (Matt 8:27)
The history of this achievement in being able to control the elements of nature and bring them under control, was indelibly etched on the minds of the disciples. Never in the history of mankind has any individual been able to successfully speak to the wind and the sea to obey him. It was therefore not surprising that the disciples assumed at the back of their minds that Christ must be above death. He cannot be killed without his permission or collusion.
Food for thought: The disciples were firm in their belief that a little sleep due to tiredness could never result in the arrest and subsequent death of their Master. Unfortunately, they were wrong this time, yet God used an obvious negligence on their part to fulfill His divine purpose of redemption for mankind.
Declaration: A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man. (Prov 24:33-34)
