Topic: The empty tomb 84

Reading: Matthew 27:57-66, 28:1-15

Scripture: He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee. (Luke 24:6)

Note: In Deut.9:1-3, Moses found it necessary to appraise the Israelites with the facts on the potential risks and dangers they faced with regards to the inhabitants of the land. People who weren’t just ordinarily bigger than the average Jewish person. These inhabitants were giants in the true sense of the word.

These were giants; great and tall, from the descendants of the Anakims, well known for their might and for striking awe and terror among other nations. In addition to the natural advantage that they held sway over Israel for being taller, mightier and greater, these giants with the sheer strengths of brutes, also had walled cities that were so tall that even other enemy giants couldn’t scale over their walls, let alone Israel. Their walls were so thick that they could literally be used as an 8-track lane for running horses.

These giants demonstrated something worth admiring beyond their natural brute strength. They had the wisdom and foresight to build preventive first line defensive walls around their territorial sovereignty to preempt suffering surprise casualties from hostile human invasions and takeover, as well as the usual predictable invasions from wild predatory animals. In addition, they had a more sophisticated second line of defense comprising iron chariots, whereas Israel had none.

Conventional wisdom shows that Israel would be no match for the giants, who are famed for their skills and strength in war. Fortunately, Israel had one advantage that made all the difference. They had God, the Creator of heaven and earth. And He was ready to fight for Israel in His capacity as a consuming fire. He was prepared to go before Israel to destroy the giants in His capacity as the Captain of the Host of Israel. Israel will only need to follow after God in taking possession of the conquered territories.

Food for thought: Jesus Christ routed Satan, Sin and Death during his crucifixion at Calvary. In Christ, we only follow after his conquests in quickly taking possession of conquered territories.

Declaration: Understand therefore this day, that the Lord thy God is he which goeth over before thee; as a consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the Lord hath said unto thee. (Deut.9:3)
