Topic: From the beginning it was not so 53
Scripture: He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. (Matt 19:8)
Note: Redemption before the advent of Christ and his subsequent death 33 years later, was similarly by blood. It was through faith in the shed blood of an animal prescribed by God. The sacrifices that they offered symbolised a shadow of the sacrifice of Christ who would offer himself as their substitute.
“And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, when I smite the land of Egypt.” (Exo.12:13). The token blood on the doorposts of the Israelites was the covering that prevented the angel of death from visiting judgment upon the firstborn sons of the household. When God sees the blood, He will pass over. The blood of the animal only served as a covering for their sins from the wrath of God. It had no cleansing power. It is only the sinless shed blood of Jesus Christ that is able to forgive and cleanse us from our sins. (1John 1:9)
Thus, the blood sacrifices of prescribed animals, served as a covering in postponing the penalty for sins until Christ paid for them at the cross. The salvation of the saints before Christ, might therefore seem to have been on credit until Christ paid the bill, based on the viewpoint of time. But the truth is that God sees from the viewpoint of eternity. In Eph. 1:4, “According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.”
Food for thought: The shed blood of Jesus Christ on the cross at Golgotha, met the requirements of God for the total redemption of humanity; past, present and future.
Declaration: All we like sheep have gone astray; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. (Isa. 53:6)
