Topic: The empty tomb 83

Reading: Matthew 27:57-66, 28:1-15

Scripture: He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee. (Luke 24:6)

Note: It had been 40 years since the exodus from Egypt by Israel. Now at the banks of the river Jordan, separating them from their dream destination, Moses came up with this address to a nation of people that had been birthed through the transition in the wilderness. The original people who left Egypt and successfully crossed the Red Sea, witnessing the drowning of the Egyptian armada together with their horses and chariots had all been consumed as a result of their unbelief, rebellion and stiffneckedness.

The only two original survivors from Egypt were Joshua and Caleb. These were the only two of twelve spies sent on espionage from Kadeshbanea by Moses to have brought a good report from the promised land. The ten other spies only succeeded in extolling the size, strength and might of the inhabitants, whose proportional size to that of Israel was comparable to the size difference between a human being and a grasshopper, Israel being the grasshopper.

This wicked news of unbelief did not take into account all the spectacular miracles that God performed in Egypt, eventually leading to their deliverance from Pharaoh. Their testimony failed to acknowledge what God did in preserving the firstborns of Israel, when all the firstborns of Egypt died in one night. Again their testimony failed to acknowledge that Israel walked on dry land through the Red Sea when the chasing Egyptians drowned in the same sea. This monumental failure in acknowledging the abilities and capabilities of God to deliver, His unfailing consistency and faithfulness in times of difficulties and in the face of the odds, succeeded in inviting the wrath of God upon their lives.

The penalty for their unbelief was death. God couldn’t entertain their insults of lack of confidence in His abilities any further. For without faith, it’s impossible to please God. He that comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. (Heb 11:6)

Food for thought: The source of unbelief is fear, which is lack of conviction and confidence in the abilities and capabilities of God in the face of the odds.

Declaration: For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. (2Tim 1:7)
